With these 10 non-negotiables, you’ll be able to look amazing during every season and all without breaking the bank!

As the seasons change, so do our wardrobes. It is an inevitable part of a fashion lover’s life. However, in this economy, changing your wardrobe every season is nearly impossible.

If I had to start over my wardrobe from scratch, these are the things I would get. They can create endless combinations and are the staples and blueprint of any great wardrobe.

Let's Talk Tops

White (or black) tank top or tee-shirt

Believe it or not, a white tank top can serve you in all seasons besides summer. In the colder months, layering a sweater overtop is a chic every day and cosy look.

In the warmer months, a white tank top or tee-shirt is classic and easy to dress up or keep it casual.

Stripped button-down, or solid colour button-down

Button-down blouses are so versatile, using them in any season is more than possible.

For the colder months, wear it underneath a sweater for a more polished and smarter look.

A white or black button-down is a classic and timeless piece that you can wear over a bathing suit or to work. The outfits are endless.

Knit sweater

Having an oversized sweater is an essential in any wardrobe. Perfect for pairing with tailored trousers or a mini skirt in the summer.

One of my favourite outfits to wear is pairing an oversized sweater with a mini skirt and adding accessories to complete the look. Unless you live in a sweltering climate, this look can be perfect for those breezy summer days or brisk summer nights.

Sweater, mini skirt, tights and boots or kitten heels.

If you don't live in a place where the average temperature in winter is 20°C, then sweaters are non-negotiable. You can wear them with jeans for a more relaxed look, or dress it up with fitted trousers.

A blazer that you love

Blazers are arguably as versatile as sweaters. They can be used casually, for work or for a night out. It is how you wear the blazer that gives character to your outfit.

Wool blazers are better for winter, and cotton blazers are a good light jacket in the summertime. If you are torn between cotton and wool, just ask yourself how many outfits you can make with the blazer in summer vs. winter.

Pro tip: after you have a basic blazer, go for a statement jacket/blazer. Pair with a white tank top and jeans, and you have an effortless, unique outfit.

Trousers

Jeans

This seems like an obvious, but it is non-negotiable. As someone who hates wearing jeans, I still believe having 1 or 2 pairs is essential in every wardrobe.

Jeans are as everyday as you can get. They are great, when creativity is low (or you’re just tired but don’t want to wear joggers), and they can still make a great outfit.

I would recommend getting a dark blue colour, in any style that is most comfortable to you. I say dark blue because I personally think it looks the classiest.

My favourite jeans right now:

Tailored trousers

Depending on the fabric, these can be perfect for all seasons. Cotton ones will naturally be a bit warmer, while lighter fabrics like silk or linen will be better suited for summer.

If you want to elevate your wardrobe with classy and chic pieces, tailored trousers are a must. They are comfortable, breathable, and very easy to pair with other pieces.

My favourite trousers right now:

Mini Skirt

I love a good mini skirt. They are youthful, chic and can add loads of character to your outfit. They can be worn casually, with a sweater or basic top, or they can be dressed up with a blazer or your favourite going out top.

If you want something longer, then opt for a silk maxi skirt. They add the same effect as a mini while being a bit more conservative and appropriate for workplace environments.

If your budget is higher, and you want a basic that’ll last, check out Silk Laundry.

Casual coat

This might not seem like a summer essential, but different lengths and fabrics can make it appropriate for the warmer months.

For wintertime, opt for a wool trench coat. I would recommend anything with 50% wool or more. This fabric will keep you warm and insulate heat.

Don’t forget to cut the basting stitch!

However, if you’re like me and run a bit cold, then jackets in the summer are still important. Short, light coats like this exist and can be used for those brisk summer nights.

Leather jackets are also very in right now, styles like this are timeless and can be used in all seasons.

Some options for something lighter but still classic and timeless:

Accessories

If you are aiming to build your wardrobe with basics and essentials, then accessories are how you are going to elevate and characterise your outfit. You don’t have to have a bunch, but a few pieces will go a long way.

Get yourself a black or brown belt. If you want a simpler look, stick with a black belt. If you want to add a bit of uniqueness, then opt for a brown belt.

Depending on what metallic you like better, get a pair of small gold or silver hoops. These can add a nice touch to your outfit without it being too much.

A simple necklace, or a few rings, can add a nice bling and complement your earrings well.

Pro tip: I like to make sure that the belt buckle matches the metal of my jewellery to keep it polished and chic.

The Non-Negotiables

One of the best fashion tips I have received is to build your wardrobe with high-quality basics and personalise with accessories. With these basics, outfit combinations are unlimited, with accessories being the unique touch.
